Having found the bomb we used it. We have used it against those who attacked us without warning at Pearl Harbor, against those who have starved and beaten and executed American prisoners of war, against those who have abandoned all pretense of obeying international laws of warfare. We have used it in order to shorten the agony of war, in order to save the lives of thousands of thousands of young Americans.

What a commentary on the real nature of capitalism in its decadent phase is this, that the scientific conquest of the marvelous secret of atomic energy, which might rationally be used to lighten the burdens of all mankind, is employed first for the wholesale destruction of half a million people.... This is how American imperialism is bringing civilisation to the Orient.

President Polk lied to the nation about the reasons for going to war with Mexico in 1846 .... President McKinley lied in 1898 about the reasons for invading Cuba .... He also lied about the reasons for our war in the Philippines ... President Woodrow Wilson ... lied about the reasons for our entering the First World War .... President Truman lied when he said that the reason the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima was that it was a "military target" .... Everyone lied about Vietnam .... Reagan lied about the invasion of Granada claiming falsely that it was a threat to the United States .... Given the overwhelming record of lies told to justify wars how could anyone listing to the younger Bush believe him ...?

We will issue a warning statement asking the Japs to surrender and save lives. I'm sure they will not do that, but we will have given them the chance. It is certainly a good thing for the world that Hitler's crowd or Stalin's did not discover this atomic bomb. It seems to be the most terrible thing ever discovered, but it can made the most useful.

In Los Alamos we were motivated by the desire to develop the atomic bomb before the Germans could do it. That was our main motivation .... The Germans surrendered before the bomb was ready and so it was obvious to use it against our remaining enemy [Japan].
